Not sure I like BookShot

Read this book in a little over an hour. I love James Patterson books and have read all of The Women's Murder Club books. However I did not like this rapid fire way of telling the story. The plot was good but did not develop the story line in enough depth. I probably will not buy another of these BookShot books!

The first bookshots book that I have actually liked

A SIGH OF RELIEF.
I have finally read a bookshot that I enjoyed. Okay, it was only the third one I have read, but the other two were so disappointing, it seems like I read more.
Maybe it is just because I love the WMC series too much, or maybe it is Maxine Paetro’s writing that saved this one.
Whatever it was, thank god! I was starting to lose hope in them.
I think this storyline is what bookshots were made for, and the first two didn’t hit the mark.
The Trial, as the title explains, follows one trial. The book is all about the one trial. I didn’t feel like any information was left out in this short format, and I didn’t feel like I was cheated. I could have read a full length novel and been satisfied as well, but it worked for bookshots.

He makes good on some of his threats

THE TRIAL, a short story or as authors, James Patterson and Maxine Paetro tag it, “A BookShot” is a delightful lunch-time read. The story stars San Francisco PD homicide detective, Lindsey Boxer, a member of the Women's Murder Club. The narrative opens with the brutal and notorious Mexican drug lord, Jorge Sierra, AKA, Kingfisher, blowing away two women patrons at the Vault, a high-class restaurant/bar in San Francisco. After two of his bodyguards are killed in a subsequent shootout with police, Sierra surrenders. From his prison cell and at his trial, Sierra threatens jurors, law enforcement and even the judge with death. He makes good on some of his threats. Detective Boxer and the WMC keep the story lively, intense and a real page-turner. I enjoyed the story—only wish it had been a full length novel. I give the narrative a 5-star rating.

Buyer beware - there is only one session!

The dvd sessions are not as advertised. I purchased the dvd and discussion guide to use for a small group Bible study. We have some barely-literate adults in the study, so I prefer to use dvd's rather than books. I purchases this dvd expecting to find six sessions of Keller's simple teaching relating to The Prodigal God. Unfortunately, the dvd actually contains only one session of 38 minutes. The following five "sessions" were each 1-2 minute clips from the original 38 minute session! The dvd simply does not contain the six sessions as advertised on this website and the cover of the dvd.

Further, the discussion guide assumes with each session that the participants are reading Keller's book "The Prodigal God." The first discussion question for each session asks, "What did you learn by reading chapter [x] this week?" The questions are thus more connected to the book than the dvd. There is, therefore, no way to use this dvd and discussion guide without each person in the group purchasing and reading the book, and if each person purchases and reads the book, then the dvd has very little to add. This means that for our Bible study group, we had to decide between either buying and reading the books, or discarding the study altogether.

In general, I have a high regard for Keller's teachings and writings. Unfortunately, this dvd and discussion guide seem to be a publisher's shady ploy to maximize the profitability of his Prodigal God book.

Excellent 35 minute talk presented by Keller

Excellent 35 minute talk presented by Keller. It opens aspects of the story I have never been aware of. There are six sessions of discussion material, each started with a 2 minute segment of the talk. For my money, the 2 minute segments are nowhere near enough. By the second week people have forgotten what was said in the first week's talk. Sometimes you have people coming in who didn't hear the original talk. You might say, "why can't they just read the book?" but then you have to ask, "is it DVD based discussion or book based?" I ended up going back and editing salient points from the dvd that related to the week's topic, giving me a ten to fifteen minute opening talk each week. Either the producers should have done this, or Keller should have done a short talk for each session, marshalling the relevant material for that week. It has taken hours to cut it up, so I'm slightly disappointed. However it's an excellent video (despite the constant background music), excellent book, and, of course, revolutionary subject matter.

Simply the best sport riding book available! As a riding coach/instructor I see allot of new riders. One of the first things I do is recommend this book. Those that read it perform signifigantly better than those that don't. While some may not understand the physics of riding, this book does a phenominal job of explaining it in a manner most can comprehend. Geared towards the track many might think it;s not for them. Need to Know Info If You Ride Bought my first street bike, a CBR929RR but couldn't get into a riding course early enough so I bought this book to get a head start. It 'over prepared' me for the riding course I took and when the intructor congratulated me for my perfect score I mentioned 'Twist of The Wrist'. This review is from: A Twist of the Wrist 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding (Paperback) This book will teach you how to ride like Doohan instead of riding like a squid (eg fast and smooth instead of point and shoot). "A twist of the wrist 2" will teach you how to ride faster, smoother, safer, it could save your life and will teach you more about motorcycle riding technique than you thought you could ever know. This guy (Keith Code) taught Doug Chandler how to go faster. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This volume teaches you cornering technique that applies to any situation. The main chapter headings are "throttle control", "rider input", "steering", "vision", "braking", "traction" and "racing". You will learn that smoothness equals speed and safety. Using the techniques taught by Keith you will find even a bike like my Yamaha Virago 1100 is a pretty quick bike through corners as long as you set up a smooth entry into the corner, then power through and blast o! ut the other side. I've blown away squids on GSXR750s and 1100s using this riding style, mainly because I can now carry a higher cornering speed. Keith teaches you that braking hard into a corner just upsets the suspension and maked the bike pogo all th way through. About the Author
Keith started riding in the dark ages of motorcycling, the 1950's. He first raced in the 60's at age 16, again in the 70's, 80's and 90's. He went to design school; was a photographer; designed and manufactured shoes for the stars; sold pretzels on the street; was a full on drug addict in the 60's; cleaned up with Dianetics; became a writer, inventor and dedicated himself to understanding and teaching the art of riding motorcycles. He was the first person to put words to roadracing and riding, and his research continues today. Keith lives in Glendale, California with his soul mate of 40 years, Judy. He has one son, Dylan.

Helped me survive some scary occurences

I don't know about everyone else, but when I read a book I learn from it. There is a lot to learn in this book. I am glad a I read it a few times already because I think what learned from it saved my skin the other day when I hit a large hole in a country road going about sixty or seventy in pretty good lean on a right hander. I think my forks bottomed out because they made this ugly noise and the bike started bucking like a horse ( I don't have steering damper ). I did what the book suggested in this instance: I didn't get scared ( until later ), I relaxed, I got out of the saddle, balanced on the pegs, and gassed it. Result: bike stayed up and I didn't eat it. Keith will tell you to trust your bike and let it do its thing, he says riders and their fears are the reason bikes go down and all you have to do is learn to be a good rider and let the bike do what it is designed to do. Excellent advice. This book might save your butt. BUY IT AND READ IT OVER AND OVER.

Corner fast, smile and say Damn! I did that well.

Keith Code and David Hough ("Proficient Motorcycling") have helped to demystify motorcycle behavior in turns. The concept of countersteering seems strange till you watch a bike coming directly at you and the wheel suddenly, (but temporarily) turns in the opposite direction of the subsequent turn. I've been a street rider (always having a fast/modified bike) since the late 60s and even with much experience, never realized how sloppy my riding really was. Mr. Code (in Twist II) points out that transferring the technical concepts to actual riding goes against many survival instincts. This is much like learning to ski where leaning downhill in turns is crucial to control when every instinct screams at you to do the opposite.

One of many concepts presented is "pivot steering by using outside peg pressure." The mechanics and application of this are well presented by Mr. Code, and I'll tell you the best part. It increased my confidence and average speed through fast corners by 10 mph! After some practice, this feels so right, it brings a smile to your face like any physical action in sport that you've performed well and gracefully. Lots of good stuff like this in twist II. You may think you can take turns pretty fast, and maybe you can but apply these concepts and you'll go faster and smoother.

An excellent book. I have been riding for 30 years but this book helped me improve my riding skills. I very much like that not only does it inform you of how you should be riding, but also why you should ride like that. By that I mean it explains what happens with the bike from various rider input.

Amazing Python-for-Maya Book!

Having wanted to learn Python Programming for as long as it has been supported in Maya, this book has been a great revelation. With my moderate MEL experience, I was able to quickly pick up the different topics and begin to enjoy the awesomeness that is PyMEL. This book focuses on PyMEL more than any of the Python-for-Maya material I have come across and goes deep enough for me to start using it in ways I hadn't even anticipated.. Expect to learn new ways of organizing code that make your scripts efficient and highly reusable.

The book is packed with so much useful information from proper UI design to learning how to leverage and control Maya from outside the program. I particularly enjoyed the joint hierarchy conversion and character creator sections. The Maya API section is worth the price of admission alone. The author includes a best practices section that is sure to streamline the way you write code and make it more readable.

This book will definitely benefit both noobs and experts alike. It does assume some previous Maya knowledge, but even with basic MEL experience, it expertly introduces you to Python/PyMEL as the powerful programming framework that it is. For anyone wanting to get into Technical Direction or any form of technical role in production this text is essential.

In the author's own words:
"This book is not a reference. It is not a cookbook, and it is not a comprehensive guide to Maya's Python API. It is a book that will teach you how to write better Python code for use inside of Maya."

In other words, if you are looking for a way into the Maya programming world, you find it in this book by building a library from the ground up. This novice Python programmer finds the first few chapters full of both dense material and good coding practice. I'm eager to dig in and see what else lies in store!

You will learn so much!

I'm fairly early into my journey with this book and I can already say it is worth every penny. There's a lot here still way above my head, but the information is presented in a very clear and logical format, and more importantly, the book is transformative. It's a deep dive, but Rob keeps the waters clear. Some knowledge of Maya and Python is expected, so there isn't a lot of hand-holding, but that's not really a problem. It's a better use of the book to get right down to business - and you can easily find supplementary introductions to both Maya and Python online or here on Amazon.

Overall, this book is highly recommended. I like the Rob's writing style and his knowledge and experience are invaluable. Required reading for anyone even thinking about learning PyMEL.

About the Author
Roberto Carfagni is a well-known teacher of Latin by the nature method, developed by Hans Ørberg, and has acquired a long experience in the spoken use of the language. He taught Latin literature in the Academy Vivarium novum for four years, and has studied the pedagogical ideals of Italian Humanism.

This IS the book you're looking for.

UPDATE: After looking around a bit on Amazon, I have discovered that the review I wrote is being displayed for very different versions of this book. My comments refer specifically to the version co-written by Luigi Miraglia and published by Focus Publishing. If the page you're looking at doesn't name that author or publisher, what I'm saying here doesn't apply.

Regarding the Focus Publishing edition:

On the off chance that this might be the updated version of the book from Focus Publishing, I decided to order it. This is the updated book. The text is large and clearly printed. All the macrons are included. And most important, copious pictures and notes--all in Latin--have been added to the margins by Luigi Miraglia (who has taken up the torch of the sorely missed Hans Ørberg).

This book follows the same pattern as Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata. Short stories in Latin are shown side-by-side with labeled pictures and clarifications of the language being used. Every word of the stories and the explanations is in Latin. If you have finished reading Familia Romana, you should be able to read this book quite easily.

My favorite supplement to the LLPSI series of books, whose introductory textbook is "Familia Romana." It is a vivid retelling of some of the most memorable stories of the Holy Bible, originally published in 1784 by a pious Frenchman. The prose is lucid and simple. The presentation is as that of other books in the so-called "nature method." That is,

New words, when impossible to assimilate otherwise, are explained either by way of ever-helpful illustrations or by straightforward marginal notes: thus, the meaning of "antecedere" is clarified through an antonym, "sequi;" that of "decipere" through a synonym, "fallere;" that of "regulus" through a descriptive phrase, "parvus rex;" that of "trabs" through an image; that of "motus" though its source word, "movere;" and so on and so forth.

Highly recommended. But read "Familia Romana" first!
