About the Author
PAUL-ALAN JOHNSON, PhD, is Senior Lecturer and Director of Theory in the School of Architecture at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is a chartered architect and a leading authority on Australian public housing and dwelling design. Dr. Johnson is also a consultant on architectural history, design, and aesthetics to government departments and environmental groups. He is internationally known for his work in geometry and symbolism in colonial town planning.

Undone by his own scholarship

This work has 120 sub-chapter-sized chunks on all manner of topics concerning architectural theory. Think of them as 120 bite-size essays. Snuggle into bed, drop a sleeping pill into your cup of cocoa, and while you sip your velvety chocolate goodness you can easily read an essay before falling into the embrace of Morpheus.

What you will gain from that exercise, I am not entirely sure. Mr Johnson has gone to an enormous amount of effort to explore pretty much everything that might come under the rubric of a "theory of architecture". The book is well worth reading for that effort alone, as it at least gives a framework for thinking, and it is certainly a must read for any postgrad at an American Ivy League architecture school looking for source material.

But Mr Johnson's scholarship and work undoes him in the end. In his lengthy-- and very well organised book-- he shows that there is no such thing as a "theory of architecture"; that is all just a cobbled-together mess, drawing bits from here, bits from there. His very chapter organisation demonstrates that.

That the discipline of architecture has utterly failed to construct any coherent theories is no fault of Mr Johnson. That Mr Johnson has failed to realise that, is his own fault.

Drawing from a wide collection of sources, "The Theory of Architecture" is a perfect beginning to understanding the paradigms that have shaped western architectural heritage--this book does not pretend to be something it is not. It is an honest, functional, and explicit work that should not be overlooked.

excellent introduction to esoteric biblical interpretation

If your goal is to step beyond the surface and into true esoteric interpretation, this book is an excellent place to start. In a style which is much easier to read than other esoteric texts, the author helps to unveil the hidden meanings within the bible which are ultimately its truest message. By incorporating classic Kabbalah, gnosticism (a kabbalistic originator of christianity) and theosophical renderings, complicated subjects are broached. Do not read this book if you are looking for something academic or conversational. This book is for the true spiritual seeker.

Scott Freeman

Scott Freeman received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. His current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning and he recently published two papers on his work: (1) how active learning and peer teaching techniques increase student learning and improve performance in introductory biology (Freeman, S., E. O’Connor, J.W. Parks, M. Cunningham, D. Hurley, D. Haak, C. Dirks, and M.P. Wenderoth. 2007. Prescribed active learning increases performance in introductory biology. CBE–Life Sciences Education 6: 132-139.); and (2) how the levels of exam questions vary among introductory biology courses, standardized post-graduate entrance exams, and professional school courses (Zheng, A.Y., J.K. Kim Quillin

Illustrator, Kim Quillin, combines expertise in biology and information design to create lucid visual representations of biological principles. She received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow), and has taught undergraduate biology at both schools. Biological Science Volume 2

This was the required textbook for my Life Sciences 1 course. I thought I would hate it, but ended up reading through it happily. The text itself is not boring, and the way the text is presented and organizes makes it easy to understand the topics. The only questionable thing is the way the Appendix A numbers the answers. I think it really should follow the question numbers instead of starting from 1 each time it transitions to the next section of questions.

College students should be able to read descriptions

THIS ISN'T THE ENTIRE BOOK.
And giving it low stars because you didn't check is your own fault.
But if you only need a few chapters it's worth buying a volume. Plus, the 3 volumes are softcover (so easier to carry) and even if you rent all three, it's still cheaper than renting a full version (about $40 for me, while a full book tends to rent for around $100).

As for the content, it's easy to understand and approachable, although the chapters can get long (but hey, it's bio). There's a lot of info but it's explained well and the graphics are good. If you like bio you'll probably enjoy reading this.

A series of vignettes tied together by similar themes and characters, Yoss' "A Planet for Sale" is one of the most intriguing science fiction books I've read recently.

Earth, in the near future, has been contacted by alien species, collectively known to humans as "xenoids", who were compelled to make themselves known as the world was on the brink of self-destruction. The world is now clandestinely ruled by the xenoid species, preventing humanity from taking a role in the greater galactic community.

Being a Cuban writer, Yoss' use of recent Cuban history as an influence on the conditions of the world in "A Planet for Rent" is hardly passive, showing the oppression of the Cuban people and the corruption of the ruling class through thinly veiled allegories that fit very well in the vision of the future he's skillfully crafted. This book continues a trend I've noticed in my science fiction reading as of late of authors deeply engraining sex into numerous aspects of their works, a trend that has greatly confused me: is it that sex is such a deeply animalistic thing that's programmed into every being, it has to be touched on? Is it that science fiction authors tend to be giant nerds that simply don't get any? A minor part of the work as a greater whole, the inclusion of sexual situations stood out to me.

Minor nitpicking aside, this book make me think, and that's all I really ask for when reading novels. I eagerly await Restless Books's next translation of a Yoss novel, coming summer 2016.

Lost interest

I understand the format of this book is a collection of short stories, so my review is somewhat biased because I didn't realize this when I started reading it. It was interesting right off the bat, and the author introduces some truly compelling characters in the first few chapters. After that, however, I thought it fell flat. The stories of some of the later characters failed to intrigue me. Even the pivotal character, Jowe, who is mentioned by nearly every character, lost his appeal.

This book had promise, but personally, I don't think it delivered. But I am curious about Yoss' other works. He certainly had some fascinating concepts.

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: A Shining Star
The great Indian astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1910–1995), recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for his work on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars, was not only the author of several books reprinted by Dover over many years, but a frequent and highly valued reviewer of titles in his field during the 1970s and 1980s. Chandrasekhar's books, published by Dover, are: An Introduction to the Theory of Stellar Structure, 1967; Hydrodynamic and Hydromagnetic Stability, 1981; Principles of Stellar Dynamics, 2005; Ellipsoidal Figures of Equilibrium, 1987; and Radiative Transfer, 1960.

For those concerned with the distant future ― the really distant future ― Chandrasekhar's name will always be associated with the Chandrasekhar Limit, the figure of 1.44 solar masses, the minimal mass above which a dying star will collapse into a black hole following a supernova. People on Earth need not be bothered anticipating such drama: for us, when the sun dies, the lights will just go out. In astrophysical terms, our sun will at that point be a stable white dwarf.

Chandrasekhar on Stellar Structure

This is one of the greatest classics in the astrophysical literature. I bought my first copy of the Dover edition in 1964, when I was a graduate student. I finally
wore it out (the cover fell off), and I was happy to see it still in print by
Dover, so I could buy another.

This book contains Chandra's masterful thoughts about, and analysis of, stellar structure, particularly on the structure of white dwarfs. It was his work at Cambridge in the `30s that showed that the mass of a white dwarf could not exceed a certain limit (universally known as the "Chandrasekhar Limit"), or the relativistically degenerate electrons in its core could not support the weight of the overlying layers, and the star would collapse. In principle the collapse could proceed without limit, and the star could collapse to "a point". This seminal work, for which, ironically, he received the Nobel Prize some 50 or so years later, was ridiculed by Eddington, then regarded as the "most authoritative astrophysicist in Britain", and Chandra chose to immigrate to the United States. There as a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago for several decades, he mastered diverse fields, and wrote definitive monographs on Radiative Transfer, Stellar Dynamics, Plasma Physics, and General Relativity. He seemed to take special delight in working on G.R., and produced a virtual faculty-sized group of graduate students all of whom distinguished themeselves in that field.

It is interesting to speculate why R.H. Fowler, also Professor at Cambridge, who with Stoner, who had worked out the theory of relativistic degeneracy (!), did not support Chandra's work against Eddington's illogical attack. It is also interesting to speculate why Chandra did not make the connection between his work and Karl Schwarzschild's previous discovery of the first exact solution of Einstein's equations of general relativity: a singularity in which an amount of matter greater than the "Schwarzschild Limit" collapses to a point, which today we would call a "black hole".

But it must be remembered that an equation of state for matter at nuclear densities and above did not yet exist; and Chandra had such high standards of rigor he would not have time to waste on speculations, nor the temperment to do so.

This book is a jewel. It is required reading for all serious students (at all levels, from first year graduate students to distinguished professors) of astrophysics. In it they will find scientific analysis of the greatest clarity, with the deepest insight, which sets the standard for all subsequent work in the field.

Unfortunately they will not learn about Chandra's incisive clarity on every matter, whether scientific or pracitical, nor about the depth of his humanity and generosity. THAT they should seek to learn from his colleagues who are still alive (Chandra lived into his 80s), and from his many students.

classic explanations of stars

This reprint of the 1939 book by Chandrasekhar lets you read through one of the major works on the evolution of a star. The author takes physics equations, labouriously discovered over centuries, in terrestrial environments. He applies them logically to the vastly different circumstances of a star. Yet, step by step, he shows how we can arrive at an understanding of stellar processes that jibes with much that was observable in the 1930s. A tribute to the precision and insight of his thinking, as well as to the power of physics to model phenomena anywhere in the universe.

Actually, in the subsequent decades, the equations derived in the book held up quite well as coherent explanations of stars. While the field has moved on, the explanatory pedagogy given in this book may still often be seen in recent astrophysics texts.

YOU need to read this book!!!

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who does not come from a financial or business background -- and must understand the financial health of their employer, even if that employer is themselves. I think local SCORE chapters & SBDCs should make this book required reading for their clients. (Maybe they do - it's been a while since I was a client.)
In my case, I basically understood that there were P&L statements and statements of cash flow, and I had some grasp of how to read them (and balance sheets.) But this book is helping me REALLY understand how the numbers come together. One of the best aspects of it is the inclusion of real world companies that made headlines when they crashed. This book explains what was going on related to their income statements/balance sheets/cash flow.
This book also takes time to explain to you that there's Finance, and "The Art of Finance." The latter is where human beings enter the equation, so to speak, and have room to fuzz up the numbers. Depreciation, for example.
And if you seize up at the thought of reading about depreciation, it's not like that. It is like sitting across the kitchen table having a favorite relative explain to you how it works, in terms you can understand.
In this era of layoffs, if you are an ex-employee thinking about starting your own business, you need to read this book. (among others.) And if you are up to your eyeballs in alligators running your own business, you need to read this book.

Very good overview

I bought this book in order to better understand financial statements and financial ratios for investing, even though the authors wrote it more for managers and not investors. Other books I have purchased for this purpose usually fell into one of three categories: the book defined only the very basics and took such a simple approach with regards to interpreting statements it was a waste of time, the book was for professionals and so far advanced that it didn't bother to have a helpful introduction, or the book started slowly and did a good job at the beginning but then went into overdrive with few explanations after a good introduction and I ended up getting lost.

"Financial Intelligence" is by far the best book from start to finish on interpreting financial statements, what they mean, and how they apply to business that I have read. In the first part of the book, the authors take the reader slowly through each type of statement (income, balance sheet, and cash flow), what the different categories mean on each sheet, and give examples of what these numbers actually mean. Sunbeam, Enron, and Worlcom are used throughout the book as examples where numbers can be fudged or hints of abuse could have been detected ahead of time. The authors continue this dissection further by showing the different financial ratios derived from the statements, what they mean, and how they can be used as indicators of how a business is doing. The last part of the book then deals with how a business actually functions and its realtion to the statments; it shows how a company can show a profit but still go broke, how cash flows are "king", and what working capital is and the cycle it goes through. Again, very good examples are given durng each topic so that the reader can get a good handle on the subject. The only section that seemed out of place was how managers can discount cash flows to try and determine the return on projects; this subject would have been better in a true corporate finance book.

Overall, this is by far the best, simplest book I have read on financial statements and how to interpret them. The things that sets it apart from the others is the straightforward, easy writing style and the great examples given to demonstrate each accounting concept. The best thing is not only did I finally understand the statements and how they are interconnected, but I gained a better understanding of what makes a good company with respect to generating cash and managing inventories. This is a great book for beginners; if you do have trouble with it, try working the Schaum books on financial statements first and then come back.

Financial Intelligence for the clueless

If you don't know the difference between Income Statement vs Balance Sheet or COGS vs Operating Expense, then this book will help you to enhance your knowledge of BASIC accounting and finance.

This book will not help those who have even rudimentary sophistication with finance and accounting.

If you are one of those humanities/engineering type who has been thrusted into managerial position and has never taken a business course in your life, then this book is a good place to start. This book will not make anyone "Financially Intelligent" nor make anyone a sophisticated financial statement analyst.

This book never delves into details of accounting or finance. It doesn't require any sophistication in math except the ability to do arithmetic. You can say this book is somewhat akin to Business 101.

There are no problems at the end of each chapter to solve so this isn't a problem/solutions book.

Although not a bad book for beginners, my concern is that this book may give its readers an illusion that all the golden nuggets of accounting and finance knowledge are contained in this book...hardly.

About the Author
Andrew Bonar (1810-1892) ministered at Collace in Perthshire, and in Finnieston Free Church, Glasgow. He authored or edited several titles published by the Trust, including The Life of R.M. M'Cheyne, The Letters of Samuel Rutherford, and a commentary on Leviticus in the Geneva series.

I open it to any place in the book, again and again, over and over, and each time I find comfort and strength for myself. So perfect for counseling others whether they are suffering or are at ease.
