Terrible

This is the worst textbook I've ever had to read. The concepts made sense, but then again how can you trust a book with numerous grammatical and spelling errors. I couldn't focus on reading the assigned text becuase I was too distracted fixing the errors in this book.

Not a good textbook for the class room.

This book may be an interesting read if you already know a bit about the subject. However, it is not a book that should be used in the classroom, especially not as a primary learning tool. While it seems that the author is very knowledgeable about some of the subjects, the way they are presented is disorganized and confusing. There is no way to clearly outline the information given, as it goes back and forth between subjects. The chapters have no single focus. Often subjects and theories are casually mentioned with no clear definition of what they truly entail until later in the book. As others have mentioned, the editing is off and the book is littered with run-on sentences. Even as a straight A student, who reads fairly often, I would have to re-read a single sentence 3 or 4 times and break it down before I could understand what it said. The content of the book is interesting, but I was constantly flipping between thinking, "That's really interesting," and "I have no clue what he is talking about." The author sometimes seems a bit bias and seems to contradict himself (as other reviews specifically point out.) He also mentions a lot of acronyms and will only spell them out once. If you are forced to use this book, I suggest making a list of acronyms as they pop up, because he will mention them again and you will be easily confused (unless you have a photographic memory, I guess). Unlike other textbooks, this has no outlined vocabulary or bold-faced concepts to help with learning. There are a few illustrations, but they often aren't presented until a few pages after you have struggled to figure out what the text was referring to. He does repeat himself often, which helps understanding of the concepts, but he won't always discuss the content in one place. It is very all over the place. It takes a lot of work to attempt to decipher and learn from this book. If you have a professor with great outlines, lectures and supplemental content, you may be okay. However, if you are using this book for an online class or a professor that doesn't elaborate, be prepared to do a lot of work just to organize and understand the content. Beware if you are a visual learner. This book is not for you.

Also, I am assuming that the one five-star review that is one here was written by the author or colleague, as it is in the same style of writing. It does offer a good example of how the book is written though o_O.

Poor editing and dated

I found "Global Communications" to be one of the most frustrating texts that I have read recently. The second edition looks as if it was put together in a hurry and by a poorly supervised research assistant. There are complete paragraphs which are now "orphaned" (for example, paragraph 1 on page 23) and internal inconsistencies within paragraphs (for example, on page 67 AOL has 6 million non-US subscribers and 9 million within a paragraph).
Even though the second edition was published in 2006, the data is already incorrect (although Chapter 1 was clearly written about six months later than any of the rest of the book). This datedness further diminishes the value of the book as the theoretical perspective is very flimsy. For example, "Thus, the concept of the United States of Europe (USE) is a valid concept". I expect a US centric view in a text written by an American, but uninformed political analysis is unforgivable.
I was surprised that Blackwell would publish such a poorly edited book. For me, it is best used to demonstrate why editing is important and that close supervision of research assistants is essential if you want your book to be used a text in other institutions.

Five personal and philosophical essays that are highly insightful, poetic, if sometimes murky stylistically, metaphysically challenging, yet ultimately unsatisfying. Amry (n Hans Maier) was an Austrian-born Jew who migrated to Belgium and who joined the anti-Nazi resistance. He wrote an account of torture, Beyond the Mind's Limits, as well as On Aging (1994). The present book was written during the late 1970s between an unsuccessful and a successful suicide attempt. His interest is on the taking of one's own life not so much as an act, but rather as a ``project'' of individual thought and will that defies sociological and psychological truisms. Borrowing a concept from Jean-Paul Sartre, Amry helps us understand the sensibility of the suicide as someone who feels compelled to take his or her life in response to an chec, or irreversible personal disaster. The person with a ``suicidal constitution,'' Amry notes in a typically intense passage, is moved by ``disgust with the world, claustrophobia from the four walls closing in on each other as one hammers one's head against them. Serious problems arise, however, when Amry attempts to go beyond understanding the suicidal mentality to justifying the suicidal act. In his introduction, translator Barlow notes that Amry's approach is revealed by the very German word he uses for suicide, not the customary Selbstmord (literally, ``self-murder'') but rather Freitod (``voluntary death''). In approaching suicide as an act of liberation, he sometimes writes in downright romantic terms about the ultimate act of self-destructionwe only arrive at ourselves in a freely chosen death.'' Simultaneously, Amry is dismissive, even contemptuous, of what he calls ``ridiculously everyday life and its alienation.'' More disturbing yet, he writes of suicide almost as if the act took place in an interpersonal vacuum. The Community Of The Busy

I take the title of my review from the second essay in Jean Amery's decidedly non-academic treatise on suicide. Out of context it might sound like the title of an absurdist sketch, but in reality those five words encompass a lot. Amery uses the term to describe the cult of preoccupation the living have built around their own existences. This goes beyond simply being obsessed by or promoting their own physical life and health. Collectively, he argues, we impose a will on a small minority of people who seek death as an alternative to their own hopeless condition. As a means of constantly escaping from even the briefest thought of mortality, we punish the suicidal or post-suicidal person with freedom-stripping circumstances. We institutionalize rational melancholics in the same way we do those with psychoses. Essentially, we rob those who have chosen a different valuation of life-a total devaluation of it-because it is disagreeable to our own interests. The community of the busy, implicitly most people and extending to the greater psychiatric and psychological realms, meddles and infringes as a means of affirming its belief in the "logic of life." Our traditional disciplines cannot be counted on because they do not acknowledge the rejection of life as equally viable. They see illness instead of personal interiority. Amery argues that this interiority is often just the world perceived, not illness.

The French word "echec" is repeatedly used in the book, and while the impact in the original tongue is lost on me, it is emphasized as a term for setback, frustration, or lack of success. Amery provides examples from his own life, from Thomas Mann's fictional characters, from Freud's painful battle with cancer, each containing a specific echec or jumping off point that drives one toward the thought or act of suicide. He is careful to point out that there are only ridiculous or unacceptable reasons for voluntary death to the outsider. Over the course of the first sixty pages he references a story about a maid who becomes fixated on an entertainer she will never have. This evolves into her echec, and Amery treats it with just as much compassion as he does a tale of a military officer turned suicidal by demotion. Many readers will have a difficult time with the author's acceptance of varying reasons for committing that final act. But his point in all of this is that the misery exists in each mind as it is processed by that mind. Countering with what he calls the logic of death, Amery describes how in each case the prospect of one choice, that of nothingness, transcends.

This book does not, even for a second, encourage suicide. It does, however, take an approach to the act that is unconventional by our current standards. Of course we all know now that Amery took his own life. Certainly one could point to his internment in multiple concentration camps as his own echec, the beginning of a horrifying and hopeless exchange. Rather than detract from the book's reasoning though, that fact seems to point to this text as a most lucid journey along the tributaries of an insider's mind. We can go to a thousand sources for the utilitarian data, the numbers of deaths and in which countries they are more or less prevalent. What is rarer is something like this, a conversation with someone affected, all insight and few footnotes. Let's not all join in that community of the busy, where in order to appease ourselves we simplify or mechanize the suffering of others.

The Kirkus Review is not-so accurate. But still...

It could be worse, like the hatchet job below that prompted me to write this. First things first: anyone who is pretentious/affectatious enough to quote Nietzsche solely in his original German- a quote that is all the more obscure for its reference to 'Seneca and his ilk,' (the title) and its borrowing of a Latin coin of phrase- has already demonstrated his bad faith. I'm talking about the next reviewer. You see; he's not assuming that you will posses a working knowledge of German so that you will catch his all-too-coy reference. He simply wants to intimidate you with his high and mighty linguistic flourishes. "I CAN QUOTE NIETZSCHE IN THE ORIGINAL AREN"T I SO FRIKKIN SMART NOW YOU HAVE TO SUBSCRIBE TO MY INTELLECTUAL OPINIONS!!! He seems to scream.

He comes not to discuss but to brag and condescend- he doesn't give an accurate rendering of Amery's book, he merely reveals the depths of his own extremely beknighted 'Weltanshaaung.' Here is the translation of said piece, from "The Joyful Science," (a wonderful book and one deserving of a better reader) It is the 34th song,

"They write and write their intolerably sagacious Larifari,
As if it 'gaelt primum scribere,
Deinde philosophari.' (meaning 'first to write then to philosophize.')

IMHO, the statement applies far more readily to the reviewer employing it than the book he reviews. Yes, Amery attempted suicide before writing this and then ended up succeeding some time after. Yes, Amery does employ a pseudo-existentialist vocabulary in order to make sense of his predicament. But he has no pretense that he speaks for mankind. He simply dislikes the various ways in which society seeks to make sense/marginalize/cure the phenomenon of suicide, and he espouses a different tact, in understanding it. He believes that the act is one a person can approach and commit with dignity and clear-mindedness. Make what you will of that. It calls to mind the opening chapter of Camus, "The Myth of Sisyphus," which is, at heart, another mediation on suicide, albeit from a different perspective again.

His suicide in no means destroys or stains his observations and ideas. I have all three of Amery's books, and I unhesitatingly recommend each one. I'm not planning on killing myself, and my feelings on the subject are ambivalent. Still, I find J. Amery to be refreshingly clear, immediate and concise. He avoids jargoneering and tendentiousness, and never stoops to pathos. He writes in a persuasive and at times subtly humorous fashion. He isn't trying to get the world to kill itself en masse, and he's not trying to get your child to put its head in an oven. He simply wants to discuss and examine, as objectively as possible (though he admits that it is not) the idea that life (under certain conditions) may not be worth living. This is one of the few books on suicide that actually had a great deal of profundity. Worth the read.

The third reviewer is also spot-on... I would also recommend A. Alvarez' "The Savage God," for a book that seeks to confront artistic self-destruction, among other things. "In Darkness," by James A. Wechsler is another book that approaches the phenomena from a familial point of view.

There are tourists, and then there are Tourists...

This is, quite simply, the best spy novel I can remember reading in what must be many decades. Daniel Silva, in comparison, is writing books for middle school kids, and even Alan Furst pales slightly in comparison.

This impeccably structured novel revolves around Milo Weaver and his battles for identity and meaning within the world of "Tourism". Forget digital cameras and souvenirs, however; Weaver and his colleagues travel the world on behalf of a clandestine US intelligence agency, combatting global organized crime, terrorists and other miscellaneous enemies of the United States. We first meet Weaver as a burned out shell of a man, whose soul is being destroyed by what the job demands of him. Its early pages dart back and forth across a six-year-timespan, introducing us to key characters in the drama to follow, from fellow Tourists to his boss Tom Grainger, from the woman he loves and marries to the woman whose investigation into the death of a hired killer Weaver has been hunting, nicknamed the Tiger, threatens to derail his fragile happiness.

Each of those characters is carefully drawn and feels as vivid and 'real' as does Milo himself in his struggle to extricate himself from a trap to implicate him in murder and treason. Who orchestrates that conspiracy, for what reason and how it is resolved is at the heart of the plot. Steinhauer never strikes a false note in his writing or cuts corners in the intricate plot. Early on, as Milo muses about his profession, "the truth was that intelligence work seldom, if ever, ran in straight lines. Facts accumulated, many of them useless, some connecting and then disconnecting." Steinhauer, however, keeps each fact relevant, and carefully scatters clues to the novel's denouement along the path that the reader will follow. Never, however, does the outcome feel inevitable or predictable; nor are the clues so opaque that the reader feels frustrated or irritated.

"Tourism is all about storytelling. After a while you collect too many layers. It's hard to discern story from truth." In Steinhauer's capable hands, his story becomes the truth, to such an extent that when I finally put the book down with a sigh of regret, I almost headed off to Avenue of the Americas in search of Weaver's (fictional) Tourism Department headquarters. And I did download a bunch of 1960s and 1970s chanson of the kind that Weaver listens to obsessively to connect himself to the world of love and family even as he must wage a solitary battle in a much darker universe.

If Amazon allowed us to rate this six stars, I'd award them all to this book. Strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys a novel revolving around puzzles and intrigue, but especially for any fans of spy or suspense novels. A noirish tone complements the novel's plot beautifully. The only folks who won't enjoy this are those with a taste for black and white: heroes vs villains, and nary a trace of nuance. This is a book whose author navigates so deftly between those lines that we realize that while Milo may be a hero to us, we also accept sadly that his wife, Tina, is right to see him as a kind of villain.

In the post-Cold War days immediately prior to 9/11, Milo Weaver, a "tourist" for the CIA--an agent without a home base--dealt with issues like finding war criminals, watching émigré Russians living an extravagant style abroad, and looking for three million dollars thought to have been stolen by Frank Dawdle, the CIA station chief in Slovenia. Milo, a failed suicide addicted to Dexedrine, has seen too much violence and crime. Watching a Russian pedophile throw a thirteen-year-old girl off a balcony in Venice, seeing an influential CIA man betray his country, and being shot and nearly killed when that agent is murdered by another "tourist," has just about done him in.

Six years later, Milo is happily married to a woman whose life he saved, with a six year-old stepdaughter who adores him. Though he is no longer a "tourist," he is still working for the CIA, investigating "The Tiger," one of the most vicious killers in the world, an equal-opportunity assassin who has killed, among others, both an influential cleric in the Sudan and the French foreign minister. No one knows for whom he works. When Milo tracks him down, he learns that the Tiger has actually planned their meeting, deliberately leaving a trail for him because he wants to meet him. The Tiger wants Milo to find and kill the man who has commissioned all the international killings--and ultimately, the man who has arranged for the Tiger's own death.

The evolving action reveals much about the internecine squabbles within the CIA, between the CIA and Homeland Security, and between Congressmen and both organizations. The number of betrayals is astonishing, high level agents with personal rather than national agendas, double agents, agents who sell out each other, and trained agents who disappear to assume new identities and freelance on a global scale--for a fee. Homeland Security and the CIA distrust each other, and key information is not shared. Congressmen sometimes run their own investigations, and no one can be trusted.

As this intricately constructed novel moves back and forth in time, the reader must constantly consider several basic issues: Who is the Tiger? Who is Milo? And, finally, is the information that the author provides about these and other characters reliable, or is the author himself acting as a "double agent"? The reader must constantly act as a "tourist" here, accumulating hints but not knowing much definite information about Milo and other main characters until well into the novel. While this involves the reader in the action, the lack of certainty about some characters keeps them (especially Milo), at arm's length. Numerous aliases for important characters occasionally lead to confusion. Still, the novel is exciting as Steinhauer capably unites disparate threads to keep the suspense high and his readers involved. n Mary Whipple

Just Awful

Do yourself a favor and don't bother with this novel. Retread stereotypical characters, long-winded plot development, unsatisfactory resolution- this has got it all. An assassin called "The Tiger" , a dirty CIA head honcho that uses the code name "Carlos" - really?
People who are drawn to reading this are likely to have read some Le Carre, Ludlum, and even (in the case of the protagonists name, Milo) Kellerman. There is not an once of originality in this dreadful book.
I was coming off reading "The Expats" by Chris Pavone, which while not perfect I enjoyed immensely, so thought I'd stick with the genre for another go around- Fail. I'm really not that critical & generally pretty easy to please, but this really is awful- just don't.

About the Author

Dr Andrew Mitchell is a Consultant Cardiologist in Jersey, Channel Islands, and is an Honorary Consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He has special interests in non-invasive imaging, with particular expertise in transoesophegeal and intracardiac echocardiography. Other interests include the role of device therapy for arrhythmia management. Paul Leeson studied Medicine at St Andrews and Cambridge before moving to Oxford for Cardiology training. He is now a British Heart Foundation Fellow at the University of Oxford with a clinical research programme that studies the development of cardiovascular disease. Dr West is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, formerly Consultant Cardiologist at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Dr West trained in interventional cardiology in Oxford and in Auckland, New Zealand; research leading to award of MD degree with prizes by the University of Cambridge was performed at Duke University, North Carolina and the University of Oxford. His specialist interests include percutaneous coronary intervention, diabetic coronary disease and saphenous vein graft disease. Dr Adrian Banning has been a Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital since 1999. He is an interventional cardiologist, interested in research into the use of drug eluting stents, left main coronary artery disease and mechanisms of myocardial injury during PCI. Dr Banning is a former council member of the British Cardiolovascular Intervention Society.

This is an excellent reference book for Cardiac Cath Lab professionals. Quick and easy to use with succinct descriptions and explanations. This book is not meant for lay people to understand their procedures.

Excellent basics

As a lay person, I was hoping for more of a generalized explanation that would be useful to persons facing cardiac catheterization and/or intervention. If that is your purpose, this is the wrong book for you. It appears to contain essential medical information of which practitioners should be aware. On the other hand, if I am facing such a procedure, I don't want it done by a cardiologist who still needs this book for reference. That being said, the content of the book was excellent.
