You're a beekeeper, now what?

Such is the title of chapter 4, page 88. I've been a beekeeper for almost 50 years. I'm now selling the farm and moving to the heart of town, a city of 70k, a hundred yards from the square!, I bought a hive along, of course. In my younger middle age, I kept three hives and an occasional crop of happygrass in the middle of the suburbs behind a hedge and the neighbors were none the wiser. I will not be without my bees! Beekeeping's not hard and it's not dangerous...kind of like parachute jumping. But you don't want to buy a cute how-to book with lots of recipe tips and then try 'cause it sounds fun. For one thing, you'll screw it up for the rest of us. You should get some experience or some hands on advice from a seasoned beekeeper. Maybe take a course if there's one available. What're you gonna do if they swarm next spring onto the neighbor's porch? Town council might notice and ban them - it's happening all over. In these days of "allergies" (1) and general fear and victimization, you can't fight these idiots. Do you really think you can manipulate the frames and queen to keep them from doing so by reading a how-to book?

You need a serious introduction - like maybe THE HIVE AND THE HONEYBEE or BEEKEEPING THROUGH THE SEASONS - and you need some hands-on practice. Then PLEASE bring your bees to town! I just hived mine a week ago and they're already bringing in loads of pollen. I need my bees and my town needs my bees. But IS a responsibilty!

Not just to beekeeepers in general, but to the bees themselves. They're wonderful animals who deserve something from us.

(1) I'm not minimizing allergies. About 40 Americans per year die of insect stings, according to Google. SOME of them are honeybee stings, of course. I always keep an epipen for emergencies. On the other side, a hundred people at least have told me they're allergic to bees. We all are. That's why we swell up. Life threatening allergies are another thing.Though honebees are now rare in town, thanks to the diseases, there are still plenty of wasps, solitary bumblebees and - the real perps- yellowjackets and their giant relatives, hornets. And it's almost always due to disturbing a nest. I digress.

I"VE GOTTA ADD A COUPLE MONTHS LATER that my local paper just published how a "swarm of bees" injured and sent to hospital 7 people who were stung. Of course, it was a yellow jacket nest disturbed at this season, fall, when they are at their height in poulation and APPARENTLY DUG UP BY SOME MUNICIPAL WORKERS IN A PUBLIC PARK! Despite the ignorance of the reporter and probably a ton of readers, you can see the perception beekeepers are still up against. It's beside the point that these people are stupid.

Buy this book!

Megan Paska has written a wonderful book about the art of beekeeping. She approaches it as an activity of the heart--not an enterprise. Her introduction was moving. Her writing is conversational: I got the book in the mail today and I've already read half of it. I felt like she was in the room talking with me over a cup of tea (with honey, of course). The illustrations add just the right touch and the photographs illustrate her points perfectly. Anyone who's had a thought about becoming a beekeeper should read this book immediately. Anyone who knows someone who keeps bees should read this book. And anyone worried about the future of bees should definitely read this book.

Must Have Guide for Keeping Bees in the City (or anywhere else)

When I read this book I was toying with the idea of beekeeping, but hadn't begun. This book made me feel like I could handle every step of beekeeping from setting up the hive to harvesting to troubleshooting. Megan knows her stuff, and both her expertise and her friendly, down to earth personality come through in her writing. The instructions are clear, detailed, and easy to follow, but also a fun read. Highly recommended for both novice and experienced beekeepers, or even for those who are simply trying to decide whether beekeeping is for them.

Well done

Packt's conveyor is not slowing down: only three months ago I surveyed their fresh crop of "data science with R" offerings

"R Data Analysis Cookbook" by Viswanathan and Viswanathan, £29.99
"Machine Learning with R Cookbook" by Yu-Wei, £30.99

and now there are four more:

"Unsupervised Learning with R" by Pacheco, £25.99
"Data Analysis with R" by Fischetti, £34.99
"Learning Predictive Analytics with R" by Mayor, £31.99
"Mastering Data Analysis with R" by Daroczi, £34.99

So far I have gone through the first two "new" titles, and had a peek at the other two. Pacheco's book is a clear "pass", Mayor's and Daroczi's look promising [UPD: I was wrong] - and finally, Fischetti's is ... a pleasant surprise, a rare careful, original book in Pack't sea of low-quality, low-value-added quickies. It is so nice to see an author (a) thinking about what he wants to present and (b) crafting his text - as opposed to walking through an oh-so-familiar checklist of machine-learning algorithms and regaling readers with half-competent, shallow digests of "theory" found in better books. Now, since this book, surprisingly, covers "proper" statistics, not the machine-learning algorithms, you may need a book on those - I would recommend "Introduction to Statistical Learning" by Witten et al. - but "Data Analysis with R" definitely gets my endorsement, as a friendly yet substantial introduction.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Entertaining Introduction - Recommended

Based on co-worker's recommendation, I purchased Tony Fischetti's book "Data Analysis with R". I read most of it over the weekend and I can say it is an entertaining read.

Depending on one's approach to statistics, the book can be praised or criticized for being intentionally light on theory and heavy on practical application. In my opinion the world is full of heavy theoretical tomes, so I consider this assessment praise. That said, a background in calculus will make the integration discussion seem less like magic and more like the obvious application of mathematics that it is. I think the book is arguably aimed at CS majors, given how it is written and who published it, so I think assuming that most readers will have had at least some exposure to integral calculus is fine.

The book is full of graphics, which I like, and I appreciate that the author takes the time to tell the reader how to make these graphs, plots, etc. for him/her self. The code itself is also both informative and amusing. The book is published in black and white, and all the graphics look perfectly normal. However, the instructions included in the book would give you some really fun colored graphs if followed to the letter. Pink probability density functions? - Oh yeah!

I also enjoyed the well-constructed humor in the Exercises. I will use the exercises at the end of Chapter 3 to highlight his style of humor. Chapter 3 is about "describing relationships" between variables and includes correlation, etc. All perfectly logical things for the third chapter of a book on data analysis. Here are two of the exercises at the end of the chapter. One is normal. One is . . . not.

- Look at the documentation on cor with help("cor"). You can see, in addition to "pearson" and "spearman", there is an option for "kendall". Learn about Kendall's tau. Why, and under what conditions is it considered better than Spearman's rho?

- Gustave Flaubert is well understood to be a classist misogynist and this, of course, influenced how he developed the character of Emma Bovary. However, it is not uncommon for the readers to identify and empathize with her, and they are often devastated by trhe book's conclusion. In fact, translator Geoffrey Wall asserts that Emma dies in a pain that is exactly adjusted to the intensity of our preceding identification. How can the fact that some sympathize with Emma be reconciled with Flaubert's apparent intention? In your response, assume a post-structuralist approach to authorial intent.

Fortunately, I am married to an English major. I confess, I was drinking bourbon when I read this question and I nearly sprayed perfectly good bourbon all over an unsuspecting cat who was sitting in my lap at that moment. Fortunately, for the cat (and the book), I kept the bourbon in my mouth.

The book starts with ‘Refresher’ section which nicely explains the fundamentals of R . It helps clear the basics for the beginners like me, and provide a quick recap to people well-versed with it. As it progresses It deep dives into the application of advanced and effective analytic methodologies and shows how to apply those techniques to real-world data though with real-world examples. The last chapter gives an insight on how to put best practices into effect to make our job easier.

The contents of the book are well categorized and filled with many simple tips, tricks and small notes. Each chapter has engaging problems and exercises. The author also added humor into the book which makes it more interesting and entertaining. Each chapter ends with a comprehensive summary. The generous use of examples and illustrations in form of charts helped me grasp things faster. The author has taken efforts to show step-by-step resolution for his examples. However, disappointed to see goof-up with the page numbers, if possible resolve it quickly. Also, it would have been better had the author provided few pointers against the problems given in the exercises. That way it would have matched his view and the reader's view and ensured that the reader has understood the concepts completely or not.

To summarize, this book is for those who are looking out for actual implementation of different prediction techniques and not just theory about R. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to work on R.

For an older game it's not bad but it definitely shows it's age.

An interesting game system. It's fairly incomplete since this does not include vehicle rules, which are available in a later expansion. You don't need a million models to play. Most games will have 10-20ish models per side.

These corporate cautionary tales point to the crucial importance of responsible corporate governance, something in shockingly short supply in recent years. In this book, Columbia Business School Professor William M. Klepper discusses why boards must show "tough love" to CEOs to keep them in line with corporate goals. He details how a "Social Contract" can set the working partnerships between directors and CEOs. Klepper, a management expert in board and executive relationships, has worked on executive education with some of the world's best-known firms, including AT&T, Sony and Johnson & Johnson. He tends to refer to these experiences and his credentials frequently, name-dropping with abandon. But maybe his self-promotion is justified, because he sure knows his subject. getAbstract thinks board members and CEOs will learn a lot from Klepper's insightful, instructive and fascinating case histories.

I have found this book to be a very good resource for consultation with nonprofit chairs and CEOs. Most of the nonprofit material on governance and leadership focuses at the conceptual level. This book provides practical applications that are as applicable to nonprofits as for profits. The focus on the team relationship between the chair and CEO is important because too many nonprofit boards see their job as supervising the CEO on the operations of the organization rather than teaming with the CEO to advance strategic interests. This book provides a very useful frame for understanding the relationship between the chair and CEO.

About the Author

Belva C. Collins, Ed.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky, where she serves on the program faculty in the Moderate and Severe Disabilities Program. Dr. Collins began her career as a teacher of students with intellectual disabilities in rural Southwestern Virginia before coming to the University of Kentucky to work as a research assistant on several federally funded grants to validate the use of response prompting strategies in special education. She has continued this line of research throughout her career in higher education and has been successful in guiding the applied research of her students in investigating variations of systematic instruction in classroom and community settings. This work provides the foundation for this text. In addition to disseminating her own scholarly writing, Dr. Collins serves as the executive editor of Rural Special Education Quarterly, the primary publication of the American Council on Rural Special Education.

About the Author
Suresh Sundaresan is the Chase Manhattan Bank Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University. He is currently the Chairman of the Finance subdivision. He has published in the areas of Treasury auctions, bidding, default risk, habit formation, term structure of interest rates, asset pricing, pension asset allocation, swaps, options, forwards, fixed-income securities markets and risk management. His research papers have appeared in major journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Business, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, European Economics Review, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Political Economy, etc. He has also contributed articles in Financial Times, and in World Bank conferences. He is an associate editor of Journal of Finance and Review of Derivatives Research. His current research focus is on default risk and how it affects asset pricing and sovereign debt securities. He has consulted for Morgan Stanley Asset management and Ernst and Young. His consulting work focuses on term structure models, swap pricing models, credit risk models, valuation, and risk management. He has conducted training programs for leading investment banks including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, CSFB and Lehman Brothers. He is the author of Fixed Income Markets and Their Derivatives. He has served on the Treasury Bond Markets Advisory Committee.

Good general information, disappointing textbook

While the book contains a lot of useful general information about Fixed Income securities, as a textbook it was a disappointment.
The author assumes that the readers are familiar with some terms and concepts - a definite no for a beginners' textbook which this one attempts to be. Once I failed to do a homework problem (which reflected on my grades) because the parameter that was referred to as DV01 throughout the chapter was called DVBP in the problems that follow. Sure, for someone in the industry it's a no-brainer, but most people who are trying to solve the problems are not in the industry.
I was reluctant to write this review because I heard some praise of the book and its author from several people, but here's something to consider: after nine years in the industry, whenever I had a question related to fixed income securities this book was of no help answering it. Need I say more?

Only a good book for reference. Difficult to understand author's explaination of analysis of Fixed Income products. Many instances key steps are skipped in problems used for examples. Look for an alternative.

Use the Unamended Editions Only!

If you are using these as a supplement to your law school's UCC Article 2 (Sale of Goods) studies or for your bar exam review, make sure you buy one of the older editions.

The older editions contain the unamended code which every state still uses. Do not buy the newest 2009 edition with the amended code. Not one single state uses the amended version. You'll thank me later.

These flash cards are extremely useful for going through the in and out of the UCC. Also includes some limited international sales principles as well. Lots of hypos and covers the landscape of the material well. Expensive but worth it.

No More American Dream- The Poverty Nightmare

These are individual case samples of poverty stricken Americans who have had their hopes, goals, and dreams for a better life smashed to pieces on page 126 Mr. Jerome Greene tells his story "It's been like hell," he says. "It's very hard to see people leave and go to work in the morning and come home every night. It's hard to see people spending money, going out and having fun and you can't. It's very stressing. Greene, about to turn 50, worked for 16 years as an Oracle software developer, most recently at a Pennsylvania company that made electronic components for cars. When he was laid off in June 2008, the recession was just taking hold, and he still had job interviews. By fall, with the economy in free fall, his phone stopped ringing." On page 121 Mr. J.R. Childress shares his experience "He's determined to stay busy, job or no job, for sanity's sake. Maybe he'll help a neighbor. Exercise. Or check out computer blueprints of construction projects around Winston-Salem, N.C., to stay connected to the world where he thrived for three decades. Childress has been laid off twice since late 2009, most recently for 10 months." On page 47 we have "Magdalyn March, 30, of Birmingham, Ala., can relate to those living in extreme poverty. in 2006, she lost a seasonal job at a packing warehouse, split with an abusive boyfriend and was caring for her two children."
On page 39 we have hit the jackpot there are four different people who tell their stories "At a food pantry in a Chicago suburb, a 38-year-old mother of two breaks into tears. She and her husband have been out of work for nearly two years. Their house and car are gone. "It's like there is no way out," says Kris Fallon. She is trapped like so many others, destitute in the midst of America's abundance." Next we have "Bill Ricker, a 74-year-old former repairman and pastor whose home is a dilapidated trailer in rural Maine. He scrapes by with a monthly $1,003 Social Security check." Then "There's Brandi Wells, a single mom in West Virginia, struggling to find a job and care for her 10-month-old son." Last but not least there is "Ken Bargy, 58, had to stop working five years ago because of his health and is now on disability." These are everyday Americans whose country America has given them a swift kick to the curb of poverty.

Very boring. Just a bunch of statistics. Gives a great overview of the history of poverty in terms of morality and politics. Contributes to the colorblindness of current social measures. This is a good intro book to poverty.

Great Eagles, Springsteen, Journey classics

This book is chockful of great songs written in easy to play keys. I especially enjoy the Eagles, Springsteen, and Journey hits included in the book. Whiter Shade of Pale(Procul Harum) is easy to play,but captures the baroque feel of the original.
When I hunt for piano books on the Internet, I use Dan Coates as a search parameter. He arranges great songs from all eras with enough complexity so that they don't sound like single note "fake book" arrangements.

Only weakness is binding. If you want to play from this book, get it spiral bound at your nearest office supply store. Best $5 you'll ever spend !

Beautiful Songs to play

I have started playing again after 45 years of just listening.. Now that I have more time on my hands I wanted to learn to play some songs that I love on my new digital piano. After 2 weeks of receiving this book and practicing, I am able to play some of the songs, although slowly. I am already playing Desperado, Drive, Eye of the Tiger, and Hotel California. The songs sound so nice I sometimes practice for hours. I had searched the internet and found this book to have more of the songs I loved than others, and at a decent price.

Great Selection

This is a great selection of classic rock hits from the 60's thru the 80's done in "easy piano" style by Dan Coates. Many of these 50 selections are the same as those in the Rolling Stones top 500 vol. 1 and 2. The selections I've played around with so far sound much like the original piece of music. They do take a while for this one year student of piano to master. A great piano sheet music investment.
