excellent book

This is an amazing book not to mention the only one that covers the latest version of typescript.
It goes beyond typescript and explains many important concept in object-oriented programming and JavaScript.

I am a senior JavaScript developer and developed in action script 3 for many years so typing was not something new to me, but I was still able to pick up a lot of good information such as generators reflection and more.

I guess my only negative comment , is that the author did not cover casting which is super important in oop, but the book still deserves five stars because it pre-much covers everything else and more.

with angler 2 around the corner I'm sure this book is going to pick up an audience.

Introductory and Intermediate Coverage of TypeScript and a Look at Modern ECMAScript Features

"Learning TypeScript" contains ten chapters describing in detail the modern state of ECMAScript and two common implementations of ECMAScript (JavaScript and TypeScript). The book not only introduces the reader to TypeScript 1.5+, but also looks at where the ECMAScript specification is going with ES6 and ES7. It uses TypeScript implementation details to help demonstrate where ECMAScript is headed.

Chapters 1, 3, and 4 are heavily TypeScript-specific and are the introductory chapters on the language. For the most part the remainder of the book covers syntax, concepts, and ideas that largely apply to JavaScript as well as TypeScript. This includes chapters on testing, working with the JavaScript runtime, and improving runtime performance.

The chapter on object-oriented programming contains concepts familiar to developers used to using class-based object-oriented languages such as Java and C#, but is likely to provide some key insights for those who are primarily comfortable with JavaScript's prototype-based object-oriented approach.

The code listings in the PDF version of "Learning TypeScript" that Packt Publishing provided for me to review are black text on white background with no color syntax and no line numbers. Most graphics, illustrations, and screen snapshots in the PDF version are in color.

Because "Learning TypeScript" contains both TypeScript-specific details and JavaScript-general details (TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript), the book is largely standalone, meaning that a person with only minimal JavaScript exposure is likely able to learn TypeScript from using this book. Even a person interested only in JavaScript (and not in TypeScript) would find the several JavaScript-general topics interesting because they are on current and near-future JavaScript features.

I don't think this is a quality software engineering book, much less one worth $50+. There are plenty typos and formatting errors, code examples copied and pasted across chapters and sections, and the code examples themselves are trivial.

The book also purports to give some treatment to more advanced concepts like the JS Runtime, but not enough depth diagrams or examples are provided for, e.g., the prototypal inheritance section.

Some parts of the exposition are just plain misleading or wrong - for example, claiming that "this" in a constructor function points to the object's prototype (p. 150), and not the instance itself. Er, what?

There's nothing on writing your own declaration files - important if you're doing open-source.

I was going to contribute to the errata, but decided I'm just going to return the book. To be fair, this is the author's first book, and as of this writing, it seems like he just recently graduated college and joined GitHub this year.

I would recommend passing on this and using the official documentation instead plus auxiliary reading on decorators. That's a much more efficient path and won't set you back $50+.

on of the best books on judicial review

This is an excellent book for scholars interested in judicial review. Bobbitt breaks down the typology of constitutional interpretation into six categories.

It is not written in a manner that is accessible for the casual reader, but if you are interested in how constitutional interpretation is approached from different philosophies - what separates a Justice Frankfurter from a Justice Black, or a Scalia from Stevens -- then I would highly reccomend this book.

An Interesting Approach

This book provides a well written explanation to the logic of various constitutional arguments. The inclusion of arguments favored by Justices as well as specific situations in which they were relevant helps establish the relevant context clearly and effectively.

While the strict empiricist may finish reading disappointed, those looking for insight into the approach of judges would be well served to give this a look.

About the Author

Peter Wyatt is a Chartered Valuation Surveyor who has conducted extensive teaching, consultancy and research in land management and valuation.  Currently Director of Undergraduate Programmes for Real Estate & Planning at the University of Reading, he has developed and delivered national and international university programmes at all levels, has published widely in leading real estate journals and has published two text books.  Dr Wyatt has been involved with and lead national, European and international real estate research projects.  Recent projects have investigated the way in which key attributes of the domestic and non-domestic building stock affect value; in particular energy consumption, environmental labelling and public transport accessibility.  Ongoing work with UK Government is investigating the theory and practice of development viability appraisal in planning policy, focusing on the issue of development value and planning gain.

This book is the only organic and organized review of plasmas involving particle formation. It provides you with all the basic equations needed to approach the most common phenomena in dusty plasmas. It has a place of honor on my desk and without it my life as a researcher would be much harded.

Too bad that the price is not for every pocket!

EXCELLENT Reference !!!!

I had used three other Russian/English dictionarys but this has it all. It even has some 4 letter words you might find offensive. My wife is Russian and our communication has improved because of this fantastic dictionary. The meanings of words have been well researched and are translated exactly. I would recommend this reference for anyone learning Russian or for the Russian needing an English word equivilant.

An excellent reference

As a Russian translator in the U.S. military, I have used this edition as well as earlier ones in my work, and I have to say that this is an improvement upon the others, which were already very good. A question for the reviewer who wrote that the back cover contained spelling mistakes in Russian: Where are they? I know the spelling system of the language quite well, and reading the back cover several times, I could find neither spelling mistakes nor incorrect case endings. As for word choice in Russian, it could be that native speakers would have phrased some things differently (as a non-native speaker, it's hard for me to judge), but the Russian text is certainly grammatically correct and the meaning is clearly conveyed.

Helping you decide if this is the best for you.

I would like to clarify some points mentioned below by other reviewers. First of all it is true that the Russian pronunciation is not given, but neither is it given in any other English-Russian dictionary that I know of, or, for that matter, in any Russian dictionary. This is because in Russian each sound is pronounced like it is written. So basically you have to learn the Russian alphabet. So this is not for real beginners. One can't blame the dictionary for this because it was created as an aid, not a teaching course. Still there are some grammatical rules you'll have to learn if you want to pronounce the Russian words correctly, not too difficult rules in my opinion. Basically it all comes down to the accent (very simple stuff). I will resist giving you examples and instead I will give you the websites where you can learn for yourself. If one wants to learn Russian from scratch (or almost from scratch) I recommend that he visits these two websites. They are free and they should be useful if the person wants to know if he really wants to pursue learning Russian before spending money on books, it will help him decide whether he is sure that he is serious about this.

After studying the above websites I would recommend, for the beginner, to buy books like "Russian Course, The New Penguin : A Complete Course for Beginners", or "Russian Stories (Russkie Rasskazy): A Dual-Language Book" if he is more advanced.

Like with any language the real difficulty is memorizing and learning the actual words, not the grammar.

But a person can spend his entire life as a native English-speaker and still find some words that are outside of frequent usage that he doesn't know how to pronounce; this will never happen with languages like Russian or Greek. Thus the grammar is a bit more difficult to learn in those languages but it serves you for life.

I agree that this dictionary is insufficient if you're reading heavy literature. But if you know enough Russian to read Dostoyevsky then you should know enough Russian to be able to visit an online Russian bookstore (like [...] or [...] or [...]) and find a good multi-volume Russian dictionary for yourself.

About the Author
Paul Adams is widely recognized as one of the leading thinkers on the social web. He is a researcher and designer, currently working as the Global Brand Experience Manager at Facebook. Prior to Facebook, Paul led Google’s social research team, where his work influenced the direction of Google+, and where he also worked on Gmail, YouTube, and Mobile. He has worked in the user experience field for the last 11 years, as a product designer with Dyson, a consultant for clients including Vodafone, the BBC, and the Guardian, and as a researcher in the fields of social behavior and technology across Europe, the U.S., and Asia.

Required knowledge for everyone, not just marketers

Grouped is a well-written, concise, and relevant summary of the latest thinking in social networking and social influence. It's like the crib notes to a four-year degree in social psychology and sociology. Beautifully laid out and designed to be easily consumable, it quickly covers the fundamental ideas and research about how and why we connect with one another, how ideas spread, how we make decisions, and why this all means that "permission marketing" through social networks is likely to be more relevant and effective than current "interruption marketing" of mass media advertizing.

It does read at times like an advertisment for Facebook (indeed, a cynic might pigeonhole this entire book as a "white paper" for Facebook Ads), but I know Adams better than that (having had the pleasure of working with him at Google on the early stages of Google+), and my take is that Adams sees Facebook as out in front of an important shift in the way advertising will work in general (perhaps this is why he now works there), so Facebook merely provides the best (and in many cases only) example of putting his ideas to work in the real world.

Beyond the explicit goals of developing better marketing campaigns, Adams makes the case (and I firmly agree) that the content of this book is essentially required knowledge for all of us as we move into an increasingly interconnected world in which our social networks (real and digital) and our "predictably irrational" brain help us navigate the endless, swelling seas of information surrounding us. Despite working in this field for years, I learned some new things and found myself nodding in approval at much of the rest. So if you're new to these ideas--or even if you just want an efficient and enjoyable refresher course--this book is well worth your time.

The key to social media? Focus on behaviors!

Paul Adams breaks down the complexities of social media by telling us to focus on behavior rather than technology. People behaving exactly as they have for centuries- social media is just an example of technology catching up. He has some really fascinating insights to back this up (ex. the brain can only store 150 relationships...directly proportionate to the average number of friends on Facebook). This book really lowers the barriers to understanding social media and its implications on marketing. Totally worth the 4-5 hours it takes to read this. I suspect this will soon be required reading for anyone in-house or agency-side in marketing today.

Well researched, succint examination of how and why social media is growing and what it means for marketers

This fairly easy to read book discusses how and why social media is growing. The POV is that this is not a fad but an outcome of basic human instincts around socialization. There are well researched and well argued claims that organizing information and the web around people's social networks is the natural and inevitable consequence of how people have always behaved. It remains to be seen whether this is "inevitable" but the author presents persuasive arguments for why this makes sense.

There is good content about how the networks interact; what people like to share, why, and with whom. Some of this may be obvious but I liked the simple yet comprehensive list of insights. For example, the author underplays the value of "influencers" that Malcolm Gladwell touted in Tipping Point and argues that mostly people are influenced by those emotionally closest to them, often without even realizing it.

A concurrent story alongside discussing social networks is what it means for marketers. Several insights have been provided around how marketers can best work with social conversations to help grow their products. For example, seeding several groups with ideas versus targeting a few trendsetters, focusing on emotional arousal, gaining trust through WOM endorsement, preparing content that is "shareworthy", customizing data around people's social connections etc. Examples are Facebook specific (where the author works), yet can be abstracted. I have been to marketing conferences where people brainstormed about how social media affects/will impact marketing, and this book covers it all in a well structured manner.

Lastly, it is worth mentioning that this book is pretty easy to read. The articles are well researched but the author thankfully presented the content simply instead of using MBA/PhD language. You can read this sipping coffee on a plane and still absorb the content.
