The most readable anthology of Greek mythology.

While selecting books for an elementary school gifted and talented program, I think I scanned virtually every book of Greek mythology that has been published. I selected this book for my program as the most interesting and readable book. Alice Low writes in a clear style and systematically introduces the Greek gods and heroes while also making references to the other stories. Too many books on this topic are written in old-fashioned language that discourages the reader. Most other books fail to link the various stories to one another, leaving the reader feeling a bit disjointed. Low interweaves the tales, which gives a smooth narrative flow. The fact that 10-year-old children became enthusiastic about Greek mythology demonstrates the value of this book.

Best introduction to its subject that I know of

When one is trying to get a basic overall grasp of Greek mythology, it can be an overwhelming and formidable subject, and one can be at a loss for the best place to start. Most books I've found either give too much detail too fast or else are hit-and-miss selections that don't give a very comprehensive introduction. If that's been your experience too, this book could be an excellent solution to your problem. It gives a highly readable thorough introduction without overwhelming you with details. As an introduction to or review of Greek mythology, it is therefore highly recommendable. Although probably aimed primarily at children, I suppose grown-ups too, if not already expert on the subject, won't find it too elementary.

This book has great myths. At first, it seems boring, but soon your eyes will be glued onto the pages. It is a wonderful book to share around to your classmates and teachers. Each story has a morel that teaches you well on a situation. I recommend this to people around the teens.

There was a sudden crisis of national self-confidence, leading one commentator to suggest in 1927 that 'the Scots are a dying race.' Royle examines related themes such as the overwhelming response to the call for volunteers and the subsequent high rate of fatalities, the performance of Scottish military formations in 1915 and 1916, the militarisation of the Scottish homeland, the resistance to war in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, the boom in the heavy industries and the strengthening of women's role in society following on from wartime employment.

Trevor Royle is a broadcaster and author specialising in the history of war and empire. His most recent books include Patton: Old Blood and Guts and The British Civil War: The Wars of the Three Kingdoms 1638-1660. He is associate editor of the Sunday Herald and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Fine piece of historiography

Royle's book was an accessible work of historiography. He traced the path of the Scottish regiments fighting on three continents as well as the feats of individuals Scottish soldiers and leaders (most notably Field Marshal Haig). He chronicled some of the major issues on the home front, during and after the war, such as the radicalization of Scots laborers and the attempts of returning veterans to secure land in the aftermath of the war. The book was far from perfect; the chronology was occasionally awkward, some of the points of emphasis were idiosyncratic, and the author seemed torn between whether to make subjective judgments or simply to lay out competing points of view in pertinent historical debates. On the aggregate, however, it ranks as a very important contribution to the history of Scotland and as a fine work for students of WWI and European history on how the "macro" scale of world war impacted the "micro" scale of a small European country.

Textbookish read; very interesting

This either is or could be a text for a film studies class, so it has a very academic bend to how it's organized and reads (meaning, a theoretical position). That makes it a bit more complex to digest than similar books in this genre. I enjoyed the content--good analysis of female stars' "gay careers," which are really about, for example, the non-mainstream, non-traditionally feminine (particularly for the silver screen times) roles held consistently for certain stars.

This book is good when it covers new ground, but can be dull and didactic when it isn't. Like many LGBT books you have to go through the standard regurgitation of Foucault, Sedgwick, and few shaky analogies to the case histories of Freud to get to the author's points, which are steeped in jargon.

By the time that's done there isn't much; "The Haunting" is the only one of the films that gets a "full" treatment, a blow by blow interpretation of the film's lesbian (as defined by code era Hollywood) symbols and imagery. Often the author writes just enough on a movie to note a particular favored icon and drops it. The woman's film of the 30-40's she (rightly) argues encompasses lesbian desire and imagery, but the choices are suited to the author's tastes: FIVE Bette Davis films (NOT including "Dark Victory"?) but a few measly paragraphs about "Mildred Pierce," a few pages of "Stella Dallas." I wondered how broad the author's knowledge of early cinema is.

In an earlier chapter discussing classic Hollywood images in gay art, the author wonders why a queer artist chose to create a photo superimposing herself helping Linda Darnell tie a tie, not knowing that there is exactly such a scene in one of Darnell's early films. She has a rigid canon borrowed from past authors and, deeply talented as she is, seems unwilling to step out of it. This book was 3.5 stars good when it could have been brilliant...

A composer, concert pianist, film actor and radio and TV personality, Levant (1906-1972) was best known for his musical virtuosity and caustic wit. His idiosyncratic character is brought to life in this objective and entertaining biography by Schoenberger and Kashner, who are married and teach creative writing at William and Mary College in Virginia. Levant was a close friend to composer George Gershwin, and neglected his own compositions in favor of performing Gershwin's music. (After Gershwin's death in 1937, Levant appeared in Rhapsody in Blue , the Hollywood version of Gershwin's life.) His other film apearances included parts in Humoresque (1947) and An American in Paris (1951), in both of which he honed a persona as a neurotic and cynical musician. Drawing on interviews and letters, Kashner and Schoenberger carefully document Levant's emotional problems, which eventually led to a drug addiction that prevented him from performing and nearly ended his marriage to actress June Gale. Publicly, Levant made light of his lifelong history of mental illness and was regarded as an amusing eccentric. Yet as this well-researched, intelligent biography shows, Levant's manic-depressive condition and crippling chemical dependencies took a toll on his private life and, eventually, his career. Readers who pick this up in search of celebrity gossip won't be disappointed, but what they'll remember is a man for whom the dividing line between brilliance and madness was painfully thin. Highly recommended for most public libraries.

For many years Levant was a very visible celebrity who appeared regularly on television variety shows, acted in films (playing himself at least as often as he was cast as a fictional character), and traveled the country as a concert pianist. He was also known for his quick wit, acerbic tongue, and neurotic disposition, showcased on venues such as Jack Paar's talk show, and made manifest in the three books he wrote. Kashner and Schoenberger painstakingly define the demons that stalked Levant throughout his life, creating a wonderfully illuminating portrait of this decidedly complex man. A chain-smoking hypochondriac, with a serious addiction to drugs, Levant was also an abusive husband, though he continued to be loved by his wife, June. This fascinating biography plumbs the depths of a verifiably tortured soul but also an individual capable of thrilling others with his brilliant musical gift and sharp tongue. Alice Joyce

extremely entertaining read on a fascinating man

'A Talent For Genius' is the exhaustive biography of one of the most colorful characters of American culture of the 30's and 40's: Oscar Levant.
In some ways, Levant's life proves to be even more interesting biography material than that of his good friend, the legendary George Gershwin. Perhaps this is because he lived for so much longer. Probably it is because of Levant's numerous talents other than music.
Because Levant was so social and knew so many of the luminaries of the arts of his time, this book pulls in a nice glimpse of the New York arts scene, MGM's Hollywood in the 40's & 50's, the U.S. classical music scene, and growing up Jewish in New York in the 20's.
Last but not least, Levant was a notorious wit; he was so funny that he could afford to be obnoxious and insulting and still count on being a welcome guest in the homes of his many friends. This biography captures such wit, and is entertainingly written (with tongue firmly in cheek) in its own right.
I am among those who prefer to not focus on Levant's later addiction to prescription drugs; such a living hell would seem to be too much a sad and undeserving fate for one of America's great entertainers and quirky geniuses. Here too, the subject matter is handled sensitively but unflinchingly.
The authors of this book have done a womderful job in fully depicting a very deserving and overdue subject: the life of Oscar Levant.

A Very Thorough and Touching Biography
By The Reluctant Critic
I first developed an interest in Oscar Levant after reading about him in "Harpo Speaks". Since that time, I've read all of his three books, have listened to two of his albums, followed by the reading of this book.
This book is one of the best biographies I have ever read. It reveals the good, bad, and the ugly of Levant's character. The authors spend a little too much ink playing the role of psychoanalyst, but most of what they offer seems to make sense regarding Levant's wild behaviors.
Overall, this is a fascinating book. Levant was a true original, and this book does an excellent job of filling in the empty spaces of Levant's autobiographies.

If you want to write an interesting biography write it about an interesting person

In the opening chapter of this book the authors describe the home from which Levant came, and his Pittsburg childhood. On his mother's side they were both a very musical family, and one which had 'sarcasm and humor ' as an unending part of their talking with each other. The roots of Levant's later work are clearly in this childhood, and his specially close connection with his mother's family. Also the lively Pittsburgh world of the time, including the Colwell Street brothel and the teeming immigrant-filled streets were an essential part of the education of this very street- wise classical musician.

Levant's life involved a number of very great successes. He was a composer of more than talent, and of course arguably the best interpreter of his friend Gershwin's music.

He could be quite nasty , and a louse but it seems that many were willing to forgive him , perhaps because they appreciated his great difficulties in life. One of his famous sayings is something like, " They threw me out of the insane asylum because I was making everyone there depressed"

Levant had a career not only as classical pianist and composer, but also as TV talk- show host, and much later towards the end ' guest' on the Jack Paar show. He worked with the great musicians of his time. After a short first marriage he had a thirty - five year marriage to the singer June Gale. The couple had three children.

What is to say finally about a man who had so much talent, did so many things, but also suffered so much and was not particularly loveable many times?

Just look at the beautiful art work and forget the story.

I want to like this book but I just can't do it. The story is virtually incoherent. Why is a hobo making a fire on the roof of the Polar Express? Why does his ghost wave to the main character? There is another character we know only a 'know it all'. Are we learning that ignorance is best or that we should shut up to get along?
The words and story are too complex for the very young to get much out of the book. Older children will find the same defects that I did. So who is the intended reader?
The art work is lovely however, which quite makes the book.
I think this might have been a project put together to take advantage of the success of the movie.

My 3 yr old LOVED the movie so this book is perfect !!

This book was what we wanted - the original book is not enough like the movie for us.

My little girl LOVES the Brave Girl (as we call her), the Lonely boy, the ghost, and all the stuff that happenns on the train ride (skiing, Karaboo, the roller coaster effects etc). The original Book has NONE of those elements. So for us this book was PERFECT!

The previous reviewer said the inconsistancies really bugged her. We felt the differences in the art were no big deal - most occur at a distance so they had little impact. As for it being "dark" the movie occurs at night. . . it's almost always dark!

There are a bunch of pixs I wish they had included but this book had all the major elements that we were hoping would be there - we are quite pleased. I hope the movie releases a book with tons more pixs but if they never do this book does a nice job .

No attention to detail

We saw the movie last year with my then 2 year old who loved the movie. We bought The Polar Express book and he loves having it read to him. This year we bought the DVD and he has watched it many times this Christmas season. Someone gave my mother The Magic Journey and when we read it to my now 3 year old he has found some of the errors in it and I have found more. Some of the pictures are directly from the movie and others are not. The Lonely Boy, Billy, is dressed differently at the beginning of the book than he actually was in the movie and is at the end of the book. The hero boy pulled the brake in the engine to stop for the cariboo, not the girl. There are more errors than this, too many to list. Don't buy this book, buy the original. It is beautifully written and illustrated. This book is a joke.
