Must for College!

The Biology for dummies helped significantly during my year of college General Bio for PreMed. Although it does not replace the text book it helps to understand the text book. Lets face it, text books are hard to read. This book helped create a foundation that I could later easily expand on with the text book. It was also much more fun to read. I would read the section in this book first to get an idea on the subject than after I would read the section from the text book. This covered everything in my bio class. This is a must have for any college student in General Biology. It is also great for reviewing before finals!

Defining a Problem...

Ray Hilborn's commonsensical 2012 book "Overfishing" is a necessary and carefully reasoned corrective to the apocalyptic rhetoric that sometimes accompanies environmentalist debates about the status and future of fishing. Hilborn, an experienced authority on fishing resource managemente and conservation, uses a highly readable question-and-answer format to define terms and provide context to the complex challenge of maintaining fish stocks and fisheries around the world.

In sixteen concise chapters and just one hundred forty pages, Hilborn addresses such topics as the different types of overfishing and why the definitions matter, some historical background, and the proven ways that fisheries can be better managed. In the process, he goes behind the headlines to look at feasible solutions to overfishing that must vary by geography, climate, species and human governance. He notes the current shortfalls and challenges in gathering accurate data on fish populations. He also addresses the additional challenge of illegal fishing and the impact of recreational fishing. His concluding chapters offer some key takeaways on the future of managed fisheries. "Overfishing" is highly recommeded to those interested in fisheries management.

Conclusion of my written book review (lengthy) #geographyclass

Personally I found this book very interesting and I learned a great deal of important information regarding our oceans, human impacts, and fish. This book makes you rethink your own personal impacts on specie life underwater and personal intake of fish from our oceans. Not only did this book discuss many environmental and human effects on the oceans, but he also emphasized the disturbance in our ocean’s food chain. I would have to say I agree with the majority of the author’s ideas and arguments and again I was able to read this book and understand what exactly I was reading. I like the fact Hilborn did not include a bunch of confusing terminology that wasn’t described, the authors provided well thought out questions and explanations for all of the language they were speaking in regards to Overfishing. I definitely feel that this was done intentionally, as the title states that the content of the book is “what everyone needs to know”. Reflecting back on the various concepts of the book, I feel like Hilborn’s main argument was a representation of a positive feedback loop. The author concentrated on specific effects that essentially have grown to disturb our underwater species, ocean food chain, and ocean water temperatures. The system here being the ocean, and the reoccurring patterns in increased ocean temperature in addition of human impacts by fisheries on the ocean floor serving as the inputs that have affected the future outputs of our ocean (and life beneath its surface).

Excellent survey. Explains technical terms very well.

This is an excellent overview of fisheries issues in a question-and-answer format. It's a fairly fast read, with sundry arcane technical terms explained well.

The book takes a middle ground. Some of the published material on fishing is doom-and-gloom, and some is sunny and optimistic. Here, some fisheries are in trouble and some are sound.

Most interesting to me is the idea of artisanal fisheries, that is, giving fishing rights to locals, who thereby gain sustenance and act to preserve the fishery in question. It seems to work. He also argues that trawling is not always so bad, because it is efficient and we need food. Used well, it is not the environmental calamity some seem to think (such as accounts of trawling in coral).

He also emphasizes that there is a lot we simply do not understand well, such as long term effects of oceanic cycles.

Too much of a good idea left me baffled

The premise of this novel intrigued me greatly, so it quickly jumped to the top of my reading queue. However, at about 57% I nearly decided to quit reading it due to some pronounced suspension-of-disbelief issues which I'll mention in a moment. I did finish the novel after reading a review here which applauded the fantastic conclusion, but such praise was unwarranted. The last quarter of the book attempted to provide readers with a "Being John Malkovich" head game experience, but all it did was leave me asking, "Huh?"

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD...

Overall, I was left confused. We have the main character who may not even be the "main" main character, as she has gone backward and forward in time so many times that she keeps meeting different iterations of herself. Scenes are repeated à la Groundhog Day. There are several final scenes which don't turn out to be final scenes, and I believe (but am unsure, because I'm so confused) that the ending was a cliffhanger. The problem is that by then, I don't care. It seems like everyone has emerged from the confusion of repeated time travel loops and is ready to live happily ever after now, until, wait, that's just a fake reality. Oh, yeah? As a reader, I'm perfectly okay with washing my hands of the whole story now. I will NOT be reading sequels.

I struggled with major suspension of disbelief issues in two areas.

First and worst: the plot includes government meddling with a time-travel research company for its own nefarious purposes, and the author treated that plot point with the subtlety of a sledge hammer. I mean, come on. Is anyone expected to believe that a senator would ever be in the same room with her hired goons? Or that the same senator would write self-implicating emails to a character whose computer passwords are easily guessed by a teenager? Now I realize that this is young adult fiction, but we do young adults a disservice by presenting such a simplistic and naive view of politics and morality.

Additionally, the relationships in the family did not ring true. Inauthentic tones include the main character attempting to cheer a six-year-old whose twin was just kidnapped by winking at him. There's a parent saying, "I'm very angry with you, young lady, go to your room" after the same kidnapping. Inter-family dialogue in general is laboriously written and stereotypical, so the dynamics between the narrator and her assorted parents/siblings are superficial and do not advance our understanding of the characters.

Could this premise have been written better? I think so. I enjoy being disconcerted, to a degree, if at the end of the novel or the film, I can say, "Oh, I think it get it now!" or at least know which key scenes to re-read or re-view. There's no possibility of doing that in this novel. I am too baffled, and I don't care enough to unravel a far-too-convoluted timeline that is hopelessly tangled.

I'm resisting giving this two stars. The author deserves credit for the originality of her premise, though she should be more careful with its execution.

Summary: Lara Crane wants to save her mother from an assassin's bullet, but going back in time creates a whole mess of problems.

Could Improve:
- Flashbacks. It's unavoidable in a book like this, but some of them really mess with the flow. I think another reviewer phrased it as "physical structure".

The Neutral:
- Side characters - Mike and Molly are cute. Donovan's hot and perfect. Mom's a workaholic. Dad's bitter. Rick's a mystery. While they're mostly 2-d, they work.
- The 15 minute thing - is kind of left up in the air. I guess that leaves time to explain it more fully in future books, but I'd have preferred to have it hashed out here.
- The Love Triangle - these bother me. This one's reasonably well-drawn out, but still annoying.

The Good:
- Fantastic writing - dialogue is believable; many chapters end in cliffhangers that make you want to move on.
- Storyline - It's mostly predictable, but there are a few lovely twists. I did find myself laughing near the end when Lara uses her unique ability to her advantage. It reminded me of a video game, and I shall say no more to keep this spoiler free.
- Lara Crane has a wonderful narrator voice that paints the world as she sees it.
- Chapters - length is good and cliffhanger ends are tantalizingly spaced out. (That part of the structure is excellent.)
- The ending - while there's certainly room for more, there is a sense of closure in the end.

Random Comments:
- I typically don't like time travel books because explaining the mechanics doesn't work for me, but this book avoids most of that by not trying to explain it.
- There are a few curses that fit the moment, but I'd still consider it a clean read.

Conclusion: If you like first person narrators with a strong voice, teens with awesome powers, or just solid YA science fiction, this is an excellent book to check out.

Promising plot ...

Promising plot, and decent writing except for far too many "this would never happen" and "no one would ever do or say this" moments. To avoid spoilers, rather than give specific examples (which other reviewers have already pointed out, anyway), I'll just say that character development and motivations needed more work. As mentioned in other reviews, characters spoke and behaved in ways that were very inconsistent with the circumstances.

Extremely implausible plots and events can work in fantasy and science fiction, but to make the reader believe in hugely impossible things, everything else, to the smallest detail, must be true-to-life.

Junk food for thought.

The book starts off with a bang and really grabbed my attention throughout the first half. After that the book fizzles out a bit and the information starts to lose some of its glimmer. The Brand Gap prides itself on being such a short title about a large subject. Well, I think the book could have been even shorter. It reads like a bloated blog post and interjects random visuals that are only sometimes helpful.

The Brand Gap is also quaintly outdated. At one point the author talks about how most websites are poorly designed and shows an example of something ala 1998. Well...A LOT has changed since this book was published (2006) and there are numerous examples of gorgeous, and useful websites on the market today. Granted, there's lots of bad design out there, but things have, and are, getting better.

A particularly embarrassing example is the author's use of Amazon's market share to elucidate his point about creating a focused brand. He gloats about Amazon losing 30% of it's market share after extending it's repertoire beyond books. Well guess what...the joke is on us now. Amazon magically broke the curse of expansion and their sales have risen 219% to $34.2 billion between 2006 and 2010. This NEEDS to be addressed in the book, otherwise the author's use Amazon's statistics is simply misinformation. It takes away a lot of the books credibility.

And speaking of credibility...For a book that stresses the importance of design and aesthetics, it needs to take a look in the mirror. The typesetting in the book is "horsey" and wouldn't even be acceptable in a first-semester graphic design course. Sure, I'm splitting hairs here, and most people wouldn't notice the typographic nuances, but a book that is half about design needs to take things like this seriously. It's ironic that the author claims that aesthetics build trust, however his own book leaves a lot of aesthetic loose ends.

The book is littered with many "a-ha" moments and interesting tidbits, but I don't feel like I have much more of an understanding of branding than I did before I read the book. It's a fun read, but nothing I would say anyone absolutely had to read.

The Circle

When I normally look at a book and decide whether or not to read it, I normally do an overview of the contents of the book. If I was not assigned to read this book, I don’t know if I would have made it past the overview of chapters just because there were so many words all jumbled into one page, makes the book seem a little too intimidating . To add to that, a book on branding seems like it would be heavy reading anyway and to see and outline of chapters like that would maybe scare me off. While reading the book I did appreciate the index to help with all of the scary business like all cap letters “CBOS”. The index was easy to and helpful throughout the reading. I LOVED all of the pictures in this book; this commit alone may make my review worthless to all of you literary geniuses, but to those of you who are nervous about the word ”branding”, the pictures make this book worth the read and help get its point across. The introduction to this book really sets the pace for the outline of this book, how kind of quirky it is set up and how easy it is to read. In the short 2 ½ page introduction, Neumeier make it clear where he wants to start from. He starts with a clean and fresh start of what a brand is not, it is not a logo, identity or product, then he explains what a brand is, it is a gut feeling. The conclusion to this book is wonderful, especially if you want to talk to someone else about this book, you can look at Neumeier’s “take-home lessons” and easily teach someone the basic concepts in this book. I love the idea of the virtuous circle, like so many things that work well; they work as a team and keep growing. He continues to stress the point that he made in the introduction that branding is about a gut feeling, that we must tie together logic and magic to create the circle that leads to differentiation to collaboration to innovation to validation to cultivation.

Differentiation asks certain questions for you to be able to have focus in you company, he stresses the importance of asking these three questions: 1) Who are you? 2) What do you do? 3) Why does it matter?

Collaboration means working together and knowing that you all need one another. He claims that the best way to collaborate in today’s market is to outsource to a one stop shop and to a brand agency, also to work with the brand internally with a marketing team. Using all three of these ways creates a healthy and multi-vantage point view of how to create the best product and company.

Innovation stresses that as a company that wants to be creative it is imperative to not go with the crowd and be creative while being logical. If you’re not scaring people with your ideas, you’re not being creative enough to be innovative.

Validation is important in our very social world, we need to make space to receive feedback and let our customers know they are being heard.

Cultivation is about showing that the brand is you, is the image that you are trying to make for your company match the behavior of your company?

I loved that this book was a short and easy read; I loved the pictures and the graphs to help make a point and add some humor sometimes. I would recommend this book for anyone who is ready to jump out and ride the virtuous circle.

Mind The Gap

This is a solid read that will open the eyes to anyone that is interested in the marketing and branding initiatives. It speaks to offer clarity towards the many misconceptions we all have relating to this side of the consumer world. The reader is able to engage in a learning journey that is not overwhelming and one that offers great insight to the subject. The material consists of covering several points besides just clarifying the identity. These focus on bridging the gap of the brand. The author walks the reader through the process of differentiation, collaboration, innovation, validation, and cultivation. All strong pieces to providing a strong brand that will stand out to the consumer.

Neumier says that ‘a brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or company.’ And then goes into detail to explain how we make decisions.‘Today we base our choices more on symbolic attributes. What does the product look like? Where is it being sold? What kind of people buy it? Which “tribe” will I be joining if I buy it? What does the cost say about its desirability? What are other people saying about it? And finally, who makes it?’

These types of questions speak volumes to the importance of taking ones brand serious and focusing on creating separation from others in the process. We now live in a culture where the majority of the products we invest in our strongly identical to one another. That is because many manufactures copy one another in the basic models of design. What separates the products in the mind of the buyer is the unique distinct differences decided upon by the producer. It is the little signs of customization and effective brand identity marketing that separate the companies. How well do you know your story and how can you effectively get the buyer to believe in it.

Neumier premise is to communicate how to bridge the gap between the left-brain thinking strategists who are known to be more —analytical, logical, linear, concrete, numerical, verbal and the right-brain thinking team members who tend to be known as more —intuitive, emotional, spatial, visual, and physical.

This makes logical sense that there would lye a natural gap in a branding process. I agree that both sides of the brain are needed in order to create a product that will market to both buyers as well. The overall goal is to build trust between a brand and its customers. This process does not desire to be isolated to one audience but rather be broadcast to all types.

One question I had was, is it possible that some companies and organizations intentionally create a gap in their brand? That possibly their strategy is to only connect with one side of the brain of the buying audience?

At the end of the day Neumier does a great job of stimulating creating thinking related to his intended topic. The book is easy to read and simplifies the understanding. It helps you understand how to create a charismatic brand that differentiates itself from the rest of the field. I would recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about the fundamentals of marketing and how it is important to see the whole process.

Fantastic book for all on business, nutrition and life!

Matthew Kenney is not transforming food, he's transforming the way we think about food, how we enjoy it, how it fuels our spirit and really defining the future of nutrition. I've had the pleasure of eating at his restaurant in Belfast called the Gothic and even see him talk at events, but this book offers such an awesome look into his practice, method and life. I really admire people who disrupt the norm, inspire others to want more out of their life and explore the benefits of living with a happy and heathy practice in living their lives and fueling their bodies. His cookbooks make me excited about exploring a plant based diet, but it's motivating to learn what dedication Matthew has had in defining his business around what he loves.

Matthew is crafting the future of food.

Matthew Kenney masterfully writes a book about a chef that is not just about cooking or recipes, but bravely lays his cards on the table for the culinary and business world to get an insight glimpse on taking a risk that benefits the world. It's refreshing that he was able to take a few steps back to move a culinary movement forward and embody conscious capitalism. His narrative is an entertaining read that seemlessly uses anecdotes to tell his story, in his own words, by being respectful but candid. Humble but unapologetic, Matthew shows that food can and should be beautiful, delicious, healthy, good for the environment, animals, and satisfy our desire for pleasure.

Cooked Raw is fast, powerful, poetic and full of a specific type of energy, the type that explodes from a person living their truth and passionate to share it with the world. After learning how to make almond milk in a Southern California public library presentation, I picked up Raw Food Real World, one of Matthew Kenney's earliest works. I was deeply moved, excited to try new ingredients and it truly changed the way I approached food, turning it into delicious vibrant plant based dishes. Years passed with many different kinds of culinary experiences. I remember the next time Matthew Kenney appeared on my radar was when the Oklahoma academy was opening. I thought this was wonderfully innovative and shortly after, so excited to here about California, his new books and now his Miami and Thailand presence! Today, Cooked Raw has turned the lights on, inspiring the possibility of a new plant based journey that gently tugs at me all the time! The memoir took me on the most extraordinary journey and I absolutely loved reading Matthew Kenney's background, complemented with meaningful descriptions of the food shaping the experience! I am intrigued by the hospitality industry having worked in fine dining service here and there but I am also an artist and designer. Cooked Raw spoke to me on so many levels, creative, entrepreneurial, personal and spiritual alike. Errors are a major issue!

I'm trying to teach a class with this textbook and the errors are more than a minor distraction. Figures with the state of certain
relays and switches are labeled incorrectly. I cringe at how students will cope - although we are just starting the semester. And I agree
with other reviewers that there is too much material that is not essential to the topic - "fluff". It is a struggle using this text and
I can't recommend it for anyone.

Content good, errors galore

Trying to read this book cover to cover so I don't miss anything for my class, I have found several big errors in the text. And I brought the errors up to my professor and he agreed and apologized for the errors and told us to not pay attention to the errors. He is writing his own textbook which will hopefully hit the market soon. And speaking with other professionals in the PLC community, they all agreed that the book teaching us fractional binary is a complete waste of time because it's difficult and rarely, if ever, used in the real world.

This book needs another edition.

this has it all and has been a great tool to use. certainly new information comes out but we use this in our industrial maintenance classes to teach how to use programmable logic controllers
